Understanding legal frameworks is vital for protecting creative works, ensuring smooth logistics, and managing risks in today’s art world. In this course, you will learn strategies to handle the common legal issues faced by curators, gallerists, artists, and other art professionals.

We will cover essential topics like copyright law, intellectual property protection, fair use guidelines, and contracts. Additionally, we will explore legal challenges related to art logistics, from art transport and customs regulations to insurance requirements. Using real case studies, you will gain a practical understanding of how to identify, prevent, and address potential legal issues before they arise.

By the end of the course, you’ll have the key legal knowledge to maintain ethical practices, operational integrity, and foster successful collaborations within the art world. No prior knowledge is required.

Session 1: Introduction and Course Presentation

This is a one-hour-only welcome session. The lecturer will introduce the program and participants will introduce themselves. No prior preparation is necessary.


Session 2: Understanding Art Copyright and Intellectual Property

This session provides a foundational understanding of copyright and intellectual property laws so that you can confidently navigate issues of ownership. You will learn:

  • Overview of copyright law and its significance in the art world
  • Key concepts of intellectual property
  • The role of fair use and how it applies to art
  • Case studies of copyright infringement in contemporary art


Session 3: Contracts and Agreements in the Art World

In this session, we will explore various types of contracts commonly used in the art industry, including licensing and consignment agreements. You will learn:

  • Understanding different types of contracts: licensing, consignment, and sale.
  • Key elements of a legally binding contract
  • Common pitfalls in art contracts and how to avoid them
  • How to negotiate and draft contracts that protect your interests.
  • Practical exercises in contract negotiation and drafting


Session 4: Legal Considerations in Art Logistics

This session introduces you to the legal aspects of transporting artwork, customs regulations, and insurance. You will discover how to manage logistics while ensuring compliance with legal requirements. You will learn:

  • Legal considerations for art transport and shipping
  • Customs regulations and documentation for international art transactions
  • Insurance requirements for artworks in transit and storage
  • Best practices for managing logistics and legal risks


Session 5: Risk Management and Dispute Resolution

This session focuses on effective strategies for managing legal risks and resolving disputes in the art world. You will learn:

  • Identifying common legal risks faced by art professionals
  • Strategies for proactive risk management in art transactions
  • Overview of dispute resolution methods: mediation, arbitration, and litigation
  • Best practices for drafting clear agreements to prevent disputes
  • Case studies illustrating successful dispute resolution in the art sector

Classes are held in English.

Format & Modality
The course is fully online and taught live via Zoom in small, interactive groups to support active learning. Live captioning is available during the sessions.

A downloadable certificate is available upon course completion.
